About the initiative

At Upendo Girls Initiative, we are driven by the alarming rates of teenage pregnancy and period poverty in our community, which disrupt girls’ education and limit their opportunities for a brighter future. Many girls miss school due to a lack of access to sanitary pads and proper menstrual health education, leading to diminished self-esteem and increased vulnerability to early pregnancies. These challenges perpetuate a cycle of poverty and inequality, leaving girls unable to reach their full potential. To tackle these issues, we provide sanitary pads to schools, ensuring that girls can manage their menstrual health with dignity and without interrupting their education. We also implement school mentorship programs where trained mentors engage with the girls, offering guidance, life skills, and reproductive health education while inspiring them to set and achieve their life goals. We also conduct capacity-building workshops for girls and their families, focusing on menstrual hygiene management, healthy relationships, and the consequences of teenage pregnancy. These workshops aim to create a supportive environment where girls can thrive academically and socially. Additionally, we actively advocate for policy changes to improve access to resources and education for all girls in our community. Our faith-based approach integrates these efforts with spiritual empowerment by sharing messages of hope and resilience through the gospel of Jesus Christ. We believe that spiritual guidance is essential for helping girls build confidence and envision a brighter future. Through these comprehensive efforts, Upendo Girls Initiative is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty and early motherhood, empowering girls to thrive academically and socially and become agents of change in their communities.
