About the initiative
The Kuza Leadership Program, is a six-month initiative designed to empower adolescents aged 14 to 18 in Kilifi County to become ethical leaders and changemakers in their communities. This program addresses deeply rooted challenges such as high school dropout rates, early pregnancies, lack of mentorship, and limited leadership training opportunities—issues that perpetuate cycles of poverty and hinder youth potential in underserved communities.
Kilifi’s youth face immense societal pressures. For girls, this often includes balancing education with expectations of early marriage or family responsibilities, while boys are pressured into low-paying jobs with few growth opportunities. Without proper guidance, many young people feel trapped, unable to rise above the constraints of their environment.
To address these challenges, the Kuza Leadership Program provides tailored training to boys and girls in secondary school. By separating boys and girls during sessions, the program creates safe spaces where they can openly discuss gender-specific challenges. The curriculum focuses on self-awareness, empathy, critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork. One of the program’s highlights is the pitching session, where students identify real problems in their communities and propose actionable solutions, such as waste management initiatives and peer mentorship programs.
The program ends in a graduation ceremony, celebrating the transformation of these students into confident, proactive leaders who are ready to create meaningful change. By equipping Kilifi’s youth with values, skills, and mentorship, the Kuza Leadership Program is planting seeds of hope and resilience, ensuring these young leaders have the tools to shape brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
