We believe in the power of changemakers to transform lives and communities, and Nguzo Hub is living proof of that belief. By empowering young people in Kilifi, Nguzo Hub is redefining what’s possible for youth who want to lead, grow, and create meaningful change in their communities.
This community-based organisation ran a Leadership Program, and we couldn’t be prouder to celebrate their impact. The Kuza Leadership Program is a deeply personal mission for its founder, Emmanuel Muthui. Having grown up in a community where choices for young people were painfully limited, Emmanuel witnessed firsthand the struggles of his peers and friends who dropped out of school, drifted into low-paying jobs, or became trapped in cycles of poverty and early adult responsibilities. The pressures were immense, especially for girls, who faced societal expectations of balancing education with early marriage and family duties. For boys, the burden of being strong providers often left little room for failure or growth.
Emmanuel’s vision was bold yet simple: start early, equip young people with values and skills that empower them, and inspire them to define their paths. That’s how the Kuza Leadership Program was born to plant seeds of ethical leadership, critical thinking, and resilience in Kilifi’s youth, empowering them to rise above the constraints of their environment.
Through the Kuza Leadership Program, Nguzo Hub brought together 60 students—30 boys and 30 girls—from Ummul Qu’ra Senior School for an incredible six-month journey. Recognizing the unique challenges that boys and girls face, they created separate spaces for training, ensuring each group felt safe and supported in discussing their struggles and exploring solutions. But Kuza was not only about teaching leadership but helping these young people find their voices, build confidence, and see themselves as changemakers who can drive real impact.

Over the months, the students dived deep into self-discovery, learned empathy, and practised problem-solving. They explored what leadership means, not as a title, but as a responsibility to themselves and their communities. Growth wasn’t always easy, there were challenges and moments of discomfort, but with the Nguzo Hub team guiding them, these teens began to see their potential. Slowly but surely, they realized they didn’t have to accept the limitations placed on them. They could break barriers and be the change their communities needed.
One of the most exciting moments of the program was the pitching session. After months of reflection, learning, and teamwork, the students formed groups to identify problems in their neighbourhoods and propose innovative solutions. Standing before an audience, pitching their ideas for the first time, the once-shy teens showed incredible transformation. They spoke with confidence and pride, demonstrating not just their solutions but their growth as young leaders. The experience taught them the value of collaboration, resilience, and turning ideas into action.
The program ended in a vibrant graduation ceremony, where the students celebrated their journey with parents, teachers, and community members. It was a day full of pride, not only for the students but for everyone who had supported their transformation. Families saw their children standing tall, ready to take on challenges with newfound self-belief. Teachers marvelled at the proactive attitudes and leadership these students now displayed, setting an inspiring example for their peers.

For us at Maono, Nguzo Hub’s work through the Kuza Leadership Program is a shining example of how local changemakers can drive lasting impact. Emmanuel and his team have shown that with vision, dedication, and the right support, young people can unlock their potential and lead their communities toward brighter futures.
Nguzo Hub’s vision for the Kuza Leadership Program continues. Emmanuel and his team plan to expand the initiative to reach even more schools and engage more students across Malindi Sub-County, and keep this momentum alive in 2025. At Maono, we’re honoured to support Nguzo Hub and to keep supporting our community of changemakers who drive change in their communities.
Nguzo Hub, thank you for the work you do and the hope you inspire. The future is brighter because of you and the young changemakers you’re nurturing.
