MYREC

Malindi Youth Rehabilitation Environmental & Resource Centre (M.Y.R.E.R.C.) is a youth-led CBO focused on environmental conservation, drug abuse harm reduction, HIV/AIDS prevention, and psychosocial support.

What
We Do

It is a youth-led Community-Based Organization (CBO) dedicated to creating sustainable impact through sensitization, advocacy, and awareness on critical issues such as environmental conservation, drug abuse and crime harm reduction, and HIV/AIDS prevention, while supporting those experiencing psychosocial and traumatic challenges. We engage in waste management and waste segregation as part of our income-generating activities, transforming recyclable materials into creative artwork to sustain our projects financially and empower youth with skills in innovation and entrepreneurship. With a vision to establish a recycling plant in the future, we aim to scale up our environmental efforts, create employment opportunities, and contribute to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable community, positioning youth as key drivers of change.

Challenges

  • Limited funding to sustain projects, operations, and long-term goals like a recycling plant.
  • Inadequate infrastructure, tools, and equipment for effective waste management and recycling.
  • Limited access to training and technical expertise for waste management and advocacy work.
  • Addressing societal attitudes that deprioritize waste management, drug abuse prevention, and psychosocial support.
  • Competition with other organizations for funding, partnerships, and visibility.

  • Keeping youth motivated and committed to long-term projects.
  • Poor infrastructure that hinders waste collection and disposal in underserved areas.

  • Balancing scalability while maintaining the quality and efficiency of programs.
